DRIVING FORWARD WITH SPORT ENGLAND FUNDING
Thursday 19th 2008f June 2008 15:21
Alterations are in progress down on the range and practice area at Malton and Norton Golf Club. A new outdoor combination Astroturf and grass tee is being sited next door to the range building and the short game practice area is being re-designed, re-shaped and re-bunkered with the aid of Sport England funding.

“Thanks to Sport England’s involvement, we are able to turn good facilities into great facilities, says Linda Gurnell, Managing Secretary of Malton and Norton. “We do a lot of group coaching here, with a full schedule during the summer months for our juniors and ladies sections, plus we get lots of others coming along for individual lessons. This is a great place to learn. The improvements will allow more flexibility and provide a greater variety of practice options for members and visitors.”

Planning permission had been originally sought in addition for an extension to the driving range building itself to provide an indoor putting green. This went forward in the first stage application to Sport England, but was dropped from the second and final stages for cost reasons.

“Not many people realise that these practice facilities are here in Norton and that anyone is welcome to come along and use them” Linda added. “Whilst we do not have floodlights and winter operation is limited to daylight hours, the range is in a fantastic location and the price of our range balls is most competitive when looking at other facilities around. One range token purchase enables the use of both the driving range and the short game area. We also offer a range membership which gives even more preferential rates on range balls for the more frequent visitor. With such initiatives we look to assist Sport England in getting the people of Ryedale into golf.”

The full benefit of the improvements will not be seen until next year; as, with all landscaping projects, nature has to be allowed to take its course. Meanwhile the range itself and the outer areas of the short game will still be open for business.

Malton and Norton Golf Club celebrates its Centenary in 2010 and throughout the last 98 years the Club has had a history of continual improvement, never being content in standing still. With the help of Sport England now, facilities will be more than well placed to drive successfully on into the Club’s own 2nd, as well as the 21st, Century.
